The beginning of a new year tends to spark good intentions by many people to make changes in their life style, to do more of something or less of other things. Whatever your plan for the new year is, I wish friends, family and Security Garden readers a very happy, healthy and successful 2016.
For myself, the new year has become more than a celebration of the beginning of a new year. It has included the excitement of receiving a special email from Microsoft. Although nothing can beat the incredible feeling of the first time that email is received, it does continue to be very rewarding to know that the efforts spent in sharing information and helping people clean their infected computers has been recognized. When I lived in my home in Buffalo, we didnt have an eat-in kitchen. Paul and I and the girls..usually ate in the living room. Or sometimes we did dine at the beautiful colonial cherry dining room table that we inherited from Pauls mother. So a kitchen set wasnt something that I brought from Buffalo. The new house has a small 9x9 space for a table and I have been looking at sets for the past few months. Sets were either too big, too expensive, didnt suit the space or my taste... But over the weekend my daughter and I went to look at a set she thought would be just right. When I saw it - I wasnt so sure. But then I spotted an inexpensive set that had a tea/coffee cup cut out on the chairs. I thought....ummmm, I collect teapots, this set appears to have a teacup on it..maybe its calling my name. The price was right, the size was right..so I signed my name on the order and it was delivered today. I still need to spruce up and add more personal touches throughout the house. Gotta get all of my teapots out and figure out how to display them, it will mean more shopping for shelving units etc. etc......it never ends. I now at least have a place to "dine" and take in the view of my yard.

A Video Editor for Ubuntu Cinelerra!
A Video Editor for Ubuntu Cinelerra!
Cinelerra is a very powerful (although not the one with the best GUI though, lol) non-liner video editor for Ubuntu. Well, not just for Ubuntu ... it supports a lot of GNU/Linux distributions by default. But for this review, Im gonna be using Ubuntu.
Cinelerra actually come from a previous project called "Broadcast 2000" but around 2002, the developers made the decision to release it using this name. And ever since, the Cinelerra community, slowly but steadily have been adding more and more features thus this is one of the best video editors that you can find that works under Ubuntu (or GNU/Linux in general).

But the rest assured, when considered its features... this is one heck of an app!.
Main features...
*. Huge list of video effects (Blur, Chroma Key, "Aging and Burning TV", add denoise, Freeze frame, flip, down sample, etc).
*. A huge list of audio effects and features such as : Volume gain, equalizer filtration, freeverb, delay, reverse audio, Pitch shift, etc.
*. Add/remove audio video tracks.
*. Cut down the video into clips (of course) and easily trim, cut, paste or change clip positions, etc.
*. Crop/Zoom in-out, Edit mask, lock the video, etc.
*. Show/hide overlays.
*. Undo/Redo.
*. Change output video Frame rate, resize, bit rate, aspect ratio, interlase, etc.
*. Outputs to other container formats such as: OGG Theora, MPEG, Quick-time (Linux version), Raw DV... or audio only formats such as AC3, OGG, WAV, etc... are just a fraction of its main features to mention.
You can install Cinelerra 2.1.5 (current version) video editor in Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal, 10.10, 10.04 and even in 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot by using the dedicated PPA channel.
So, as usual, open your terminal and enter the below command.
sudo apt-add-repository ppa:cinelerra-ppa/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install cinelerra
That should do it. Since the professional video editors dont care much about the GUI... but still, I think it would be really if they come up a GTK/Qt version in the future. Enjoy!.

Hello fellas,
I purchased a new HP DM-3210AU machine in October, an amazing piece of hardware and one of the highest rated netbook/sub notebook of all time, and yes, I am quite impressed with its performance and capabilities. I finished my share of Call of Duty 4 on it, prepared GNS3 Topologies over it with ease and the machine chomped away everything like a no brainer. In case, ou have been wondering where I had been, you might like to read about it or want to join the Facebook page where I post more frequently .
Well..continuing to my desktop,here is how it looks : ) .
Well..then out of blue (and I think it was Redbull) I decided to write an article on 5 software I cant live without on my new machine , which allows me to simultaneously multitask on it with ease and efficiency. Consider it as a follow up of Top 10 software I cant live without on my PC.
Windows Live Mail
Now here is one of the good things Microsoft has invented, the next generation of Outlook express, simple, easy to use, intuitive and FAST. Though you will argue why I dont use Mozilla Thunderbird over it , well..Mozilla thunderbird is almost takes the same amount of memory as its Windows counterpart, but is twice as slow in terms of interface, and speed matters to me much while checking emails, I do hope you will agree with me. Although I do hate the calendar feature of live (which is a pain due to various issues) but still, it does the primary job it was conceived for.

Virtual Wifi Router
Again, an amazing piece of software that frees you from the headaches of Android Adhoc wifi patching and the likes of purchasing buggy paid software like Connectify for creating wifi network with ease. I was fed up of creating adhoc networks on Windows 7 and check that my HTC Wildfire (Cyanogen mod 7, version 2.3.7) was not able to properly detect it, there came Virtual Wifi Router to the rescue and trust me, its the best Wifi Network sharing software you will ever get. Highly recommended !!

Power user friendly yet easy to install , this codec pack will just blow you away, no need to install any other x-y-z player to do the job if your windows media player can play everything (i actually like to keep my laptop clean and use it with minimum software) from the most popular formats to arcane ones..and even allows for great amount of tweaking using its ffdshow interface. link it up with Virtualdub and you have a true gem. Included tools like Gspot, mediainfo and more add the cherry to the already delicious cake . Again, no need of VLC (unless you are into multicast streaming, to confess, i am not much of a VLC fan) and no need of anything else, one codec pack to rule them all : ) .

GNS3
I dont think I need to elaborate upon it, since the time I have joined Tulip Telecom, it has been a part and parcel o my life, simulation of complex network topologies and whacky late night experiments (you know about them if you have been following the facebook page) are all possible because of this open source tool. Be it Cisco or juniper, it handles it with ease and the best part is that its hackable, configurable and programmable till the last drop. I have my custom version running over windows (self compiled :) ), pair it with putty connection manager and you are good to go. Also, you might want to look at sample GNS3 tutorials I posted at Prohack or more at the Facebook page.

Google Chrome
Now again..love it or hate it, yet I find chrome as indispensible as a browser, I had issues with Mozilla Firefox (old memory bastard) and Internet Explorer 9 (old bastard), Opera is a favourite but again, I had some issues with it again (opera link issues, broken plugins) , so I finally settled on chrome for general browsing and acceptable response times, but when it comes to testing some web based apps, i jump to Opera for the same for its intuitiveness. Trust me, when it comes to choose a browser, i call it as a choice between evils. So go with the lesser one

A little issue with nova keystone and cacert pem
I was having a bit of trouble with OpenStack as I was setting up a demo. The demo included the normal essex bits and pieces: nova, keystone, horizon, glance, rabbitmq, mysql, and swift. Most of the way through the setup, I came to this step:
cd /home/ubuntu/creds
. ./openrc
nova x509-get-root-certand got a curious error:
ERROR: string indices must be integers, not str
which is correct, but not all that meaningful. Ill jump to the solution now. Somehow I had glossed over the step to create the nova user in keystone. Once I did that the get-root-cert worked.
Various error messages about this (and askubuntu answers) abound and include helpful suggestions like check your endpoints. (My endpoints were all fine.) And other suggestions (though Ive only seen it once--as I was writing this blog post after I had a solution) to "Check that your service users can authenticate against keystone."
That was the actual issue--my "nova" user was never created (as Ive said). And although the openrc file I had created doesnt reference this user, it is used by keystone to get the information.
I was able to troubleshoot this (on a multihost system with nova controller on node B and keystone on node A) by simultaneously tail -f /var/log/**ALLTHENOVALOGS** and tail -f /var/log/keystone/keystone.log where I plainly found:

I came across this old cropped Koi photo from one of my first visits to Maymonts Koi ponds in 2010. It got my attention again because it has a subtle and mysterious aspect I want in my next few paintings. Then I thought it might be fun messing with it in Photoshop.....see what comes of it.
Im still using everything Ive learned working in oil over the last 5 years. I typically use a prismatic approach to light... here its raw and exposed....even so, rules are much the same, so it does make one wonder what can come of it?
One of the things I had to work on was getting it to read well at 30 feet.......it was good close-up, it had paint quality and interesting surface texture....even touchable, but thats with my nose in the canvas.....not so much at a distance. The flaws show up so it tells me the rules really are the same.....
The real question, do I continue, take a break or retreat.
